Town Of Juneau

Our first port was Juneau, the capital of the Last Frontier. This shot was taken just outside of the post office. This is the main tourist strip. The strip continues on the street on the right of the photo. The cruiseships were docked about a half-mile down the street on the right. You may notice a woman wearing a blue poncho on the left. In the morning we had a little rain, but that was the only rain we had while enjoying any of our ports. We were very fortunate to have such good weather.

Juneau Street Just Outside Post Office

This photo was taken at the same place as the previous photo, but I was facing in the opposite direction. This was one of the first of what would be hundreds of picturesque views Becky and I enjoyed.

The Star Princess Docked In Juneau

Here you see the Star Princess docked in Juneau beneath the clouds that were clinging to the hillside. You can also see one of our tenders at the bottom of the photo. Tenders are used to transfer passengers to and from the ship. Royal Caribbean and Princess have an agreement for docking and tendering in Juneau. During the following week’s stop in Juneau, the Royal Caribbean ship would get to dock and the Princess ship would use its tenders, and the following week the cruiselines would switch again. The agreement is necessitated by the lack of places for the big cruiseships to dock. There were three more cruiseships in port at the same time.

Juneau's Beautiful Bay

Here’s a postcard-perfect shot of the port of Juneau. Notice the small streams coming down the mountain and how the clouds cast their shadows onto the mountainside. You can even see a little hard-packed snow on the top of the mountain (in the top-right of the photo). Keep in mind that this photo was taken on June 2.

Holland America's Zaandam

Here’s one of two Holland America ships that were in port with us. This is Zaandam. The other was Amsterdam. In my opinion, Holland America’s ships look pretty dull compared to the Royal Caribbean and Princess ships.
